Book Your Free Meet & GreetOutWoof Bound began with a simple, stubborn belief: every dog deserves patient, skilled care, especially the reactive, anxious, and misunderstood dogs other facilities turn away. We set out to build the place we always wished existed, a structured, trainer-led home in SE Portland where those dogs could finally belong.
We are family-owned, and that shapes everything. We answer to our values and our dogs, not a franchise playbook. No chaotic warehouses, no free-for-all playrooms, just a calm place where dogs feel safe and understood from the first visit.
OutWoof Bound was co-founded by Jessica and Erik Mandell. Jessica's path started with a background in dementia care, children's programming, and community education, then took a turn when she discovered clicker training with her first dog during the COVID lockdown. She launched Jungle Pups out of their home, moved on to work in the industry, and eventually founded OutWoof Bound with Erik alongside their dog training friends Kylie, Jesse, and Ellie.
Erik's career was rooted in international development, with a BA in Geography from Middlebury College and an MPA from Portland State University, and years spent as a grant writer for non-profits including Mercy Corps. When that industry took a hit, he embraced a midlife pivot with open arms and now brings that same big-picture thinking to building something meaningful at home.
Everyone on our team has poured their thoughts, talents, and time into building this place. Being team-oriented is not a slogan here, it is the identity of the business, and we often do our continuing education together as a group.
Our training is rooted in positive reinforcement, Fear Free practices, choice-based training, and LIMA principles, which stands for Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive. We focus on building trust, confidence, and lasting skills by creating a safe learning environment where every pet can succeed at their own pace. You can meet the full team here or see our continuing education commitments.
Jessica Mandell started OutWoof Bound at 5404 SE 72nd Ave Portland Oregon 97206 because she saw dogs being rejected by Portland daycares for behavioral challenges that proper training could address. Rather than turning away reactive, anxious, and rescue dogs, she built a facility around them with trainer-led structure, force-free methods, and programs like Kylie's Angels that other Portland facilities do not offer. Every dog on our team matters.
